2017, Nigeria’s senate claimed around three million bottles of codeine syrups were
consumed daily in two northern states alone.

2018, the anti-drug agency NLEA seized a truckload of 24,000
bottles of codeine cough syrups in a single Operation.
3. Codeine is
a pain killer but also an addictive opioid. Taken in excess,
it can cause schizophrenia and organ failure among other health related defects.

4. In Nigeria,
between January and December 2015, 1044 patients were admitted for treatment in
the 11 treatment centers currently part of the National
Epidemiological Network on Drug Use (NENDU) reporting system. 28.3% of
the patients had an opiate addiction. and the opiates were mainly prescription
medicines: tramadol (71% of opiates as 1st most frequently used substance and
specified), codeine (15.1%) and pentazocine (9.9%). Heroin and morphine
represented only 3.3% of the opiates declared.
