SUMMER SCHOOL - Much Ado About Nothing

The Cost of Education now in Nigeria is undoubtedly on the high side, and parents are always eager to see school go on summer break. The Summer Break, usually between July – September of every year also presents an opportunity for Schools to Introduce themselves to the society as well as campaign for more students populace.

Unfortunately the Concept of SUMMER SCHOOL has been totally bastardized and has become tool to extracting more money from parents and yet offer the kids little or nothing different from the norm.

As a Teen, the Summer Holiday was a very interesting period for me; this was because there was always something different to learn within this period. On most occasions, I recall, going to my mom’s store to assist her in any way I can; while it seemed stressful and less colorful, it opened my eyes to a lot in respect to business and money.

It is painful however to see Children, Teens and young individuals going to SUMMER SCHOOLS where teachers reluctantly participate in, teaching them the same things they would be thought in the classroom when school resumes in September.

Honestly,  I feel sorry for parents and guardians.

Although we should give kudos to Private Schools for the initiative, I do believe that they can offer something more. A school can decide to use the Summer Holiday Period to train Talented Soccer Players; they can choose to teach Entrepreneurship to these Children & teens; they could engage the teens in Skills Acquisition Training; Truthfully, they can do more with this 3 months.
